Supermarket customers are shopping more but buying less

Supermarket customers can save more than €1,000 a year by swapping to supermarket own-label products when shopping for a household, research shows.

With double-digit inflation hitting the grocery bill, a report shows that families can save almost €100 a month by making the switch from branded products to own brands.

It comes as shopping trends show more and more people are switching to own-brands to tackle rising costs.

The research, by Aldi, found one in four households is struggling.

For those shopping in Aldi, the average basket spend per trip in 2022 was €28.40, up €4.50 from €23.90 in 2019.

The supermarket noted that people are shopping more but buying less, suggesting they are being more careful about managing their finances.

Non-essential goods such as spirits, wines and ciders are all seeing reduced purchases, while sales of fresh meat are also down. Two categories seeing the strongest growth during the pandemic and now are premium coffee and chilled desserts, which suggests we are swapping activities outside the house for affordable indulgence at home.

The latest report by research firm Kantar showed that annual grocery bills are expected to rise by €868 over the next 12 months.

Non-essential goods such as spirits, wines and ciders are all seeing reduced purchases, while sales of fresh meat are also down.

The price of milk, bread and butter has rocketed by nearly a third in the past 12 months, while overall grocery prices have gone up by a record 12.4%.

As a result, sales of own-brand lines jumped 7.2% in the last 12 weeks, with shoppers spending €88.3million more on them year on year. The 'value' end of own-label goods saw the strongest growth, up 23.5% on last year with an extra €11.3million spend.

Niall O'Connor, Aldi Ireland managing director, said supermarkets are at the "mercy" of increasing costs.

"The Irish grocery market is experiencing unprecedented cost pressures. We are not immune to this, but we are doing all we can to shield our customers and keep prices low."
