Swappie, the Finnish company that buys and sells refurbished smartphones, is set to open its first pop-up store outside of Finland in Dublin.
The store will be located at 32 Exchequer Street, Dublin will open for four weeks from May 30th to June 27th, trading from 10am - 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am - 3pm on Sundays.
Speaking about the opening of the pop-up shop, Swappie Country Manager for Ireland Casper Andersen says "Ireland is a key market for us at Swappie so having a physical presence with the pop-up store will allow us to talk directly to our customers face to face.
"Our research shows us that Irish people are increasingly looking for ways to lessen their environmental impact however they do shop less online than some of their European counterparts and it can be daunting to buy a refurbished iPhone.
"We know trust is not built in a day, so the opening of the pop-up shop is an important move for us at Swappie. Having a physical presence will help us hear more about what Irish people want when it comes to refurbished technology."
Swappie aims to give consumers a choice when it comes to a sustainable option for their smartphones, with a predicted 146 million tons of CO2 emissions created this year and 83% of those emissions coming from the manufacture, shipping and first-year usage of the 1.4 billion new smartphones forecast to be shipped in 2022.
In the Swappie Pop-Up store customers looking to buy a smartphone will get to experience a refurbished iPhone and hear more about the refurbishment process which is carried out in Swappie’s own factories in Helsinki and Estonia.
Consumers will be able to order a Swappie phone on site which will then be delivered free of charge. Those looking to sell an old iPhone, will also be able to find out what their phone is worth and begin the process of selling it.
Swappie launched in Helsinki in 2016 and opened to the Irish market in June 2020, currently operating in 15 countries. Sales increased 220% in 2020 to €97 million.
The company announced in February 2021 that it had raised €108m in Series C funding to accelerate its European growth and to allow it to continue to meet growing customer demand for refurbished goods, with the market increasing by 15% year on year in the same 12 months.
Swappie’s headcount is also expected to increase from 1,200 to 2,200 people by the end of the year.
