Every month, Bord Gáis Energy is sharing details on some of its SME customers and their business successes. This month, we feature Jenni Mahon (pictured), who owns The Waxing Rooms, a specialist waxing service located in Ranelagh. She discusses the challenges and rewards that come from running a business.

Tell us about your business and how you set it up?

I run a specialised waxing business in Ranelagh, using Lycon wax, which is 60% less painful then regular wax and contains natural ingredients and aromatherapy oils, meaning perfect results every time. After six years as a professional waxer, I decided to branch out on my own. I’m working harder than ever but it’s rewarding to know that I’m building something myself.

What inspired you to set up on your own?

In Association with

Running my own business has always been a dream of mine but I knew I needed to wait until I had built up enough experience. Thanks to a very supportive and inspirational circle of friends and family, I took the leap and teamed up with The Brow Artists to launch my own waxing business. The partnership with The Brow Artists was definitely the right decision, as it has given me the opportunity to share my client base with theirs, so both our businesses can benefit.

Were there challenges along the way?

At first I thought the biggest challenge would be the hours I needed to work, as it’s just non-stop for the first few months. However, it was actually the financial side of the business that I struggled with most, as I had to learn about accounts, filing returns and taxation. It was a massive jump into the unknown. Lorna and Elizabeth Farrelly, from The Brow Artists, had launched her business before mine, so being able to lean on them for support and advice was invaluable.

What energy efficiency initiatives do you follow in your business?

We have wax heaters that are on all day and heating the building can be an expensive consideration. We have all our electric items on timers, so they are only on when we need them. The last
person out is responsible for turning off everything. Thankfully, it’s normally the floor manager, Jenny, who ensures every candle is blown out and each wax heater is switched off. Everyone is responsible for saving energy in the business, but I rely on Jenny to make sure it all runs smoothly and works as it should.

What advice would you give someone starting a small business today?

Research is vital.Without all the relevant information, the business decisions you make can be flawed. Secondly, give it your all. At the end of the day, you’ve nothing to lose once you know you’ve given it your best shot.
