Online maths grinds school Breakthrough Maths has announced plans to create 40 jobs over the next three years as it attempts to increase its number of students to 3,000.

The company, which started out with lessons in a community hall in Cork with 24 students and two teachers in September 2020, currently teaches around 300 students per week and plans to launch in the UK before the end of the year.

Breakthrough Maths moved classes, which cater to students from fifth class in primary school to Leaving Cert level, online after the first month and now employs 20 tutors. The grinds are taught in small groups to facilitate engagement and questions from students.

"The digital education market is rapidly increasing and is expected to grow by more than €2 billion in Europe alone by 2025," said TJ Hegarty, founder of Breakthrough Maths.

"We’re seeing huge demand in Ireland, our student numbers have tripled in the past year alone and show no signs of slowing. By 2025 we aim to employ more than 60 experienced tutors in total who will be teaching 3,000 students each week.

"There is a market for growth in other countries too and we will be launching Breakthrough Maths in England in the fourth quarter of this year enrolling 100 students initially.”

The company has a three-step hiring process for tutors, who then go through an extensive training programme before commencing classes, all of which are monitored and each tutor is mentored by the school's principal.

Students also have access to a dedicated support app to ask questions outside of the online classes, and tutors will respond with a video on how to solve that particular problem.
