The first phase of an innovation hub that supports high-potential startups and SMEs in the west of Ireland has opened in Galway, with ten companies already in residence at the PorterShed. The hub is located just off Eyre Square in the city’s Innovation District.
The ten startup residents, which employ more than 30 people between them, span various fields including software, film development, fintech and fashion.
One of the largest companies is Altocloud, launched in 2014 and now employing more than 15 staff. CEO Barry O’Sullivan said: “It is an extremely exciting time for the startup community in Galway and the West."
He added: "We are proud to take our place in the PorterShed and look forward to working with the companies surrounding us. The opening of the PorterShed sets the bar for what’s to come for the startup community here in Galway.”
The Innovation District is to expand over the coming years, with additional buildings due to open over time, and it is envisaged that the area could eventually support up to 20,000 workers. The PorterShed first phase is an AIB-backed initiative that provides a professional working space, areas to host workshops and seminars, plus hot desk facilities, both for locals and visitors to Galway. An AIB customer service team will be available in the PorterShed to give advice on business and personal finance.
Innovation District
Maurice O’Gorman, John Breslin, Niamh Costello, Conor O’Dowd and Dave Cunningham formed the Galway City Innovation District (GCID), a non-profit company to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation.
Conor O’Dowd of Galway Chamber said: “The PorterShed not only provides an innovative work space for regional companies, it is an important landing spot for FDI companies and investors visiting Galway. Galway Chamber, with our partners, is proud to be an initiator of the Galway City Innovation District.”
Other companies at the PorterShed include LingoHost, Addvance IT, Ragsbox, Earthbound Films, Irish Apps, Privity, ClearBookings, PayWear and QA Services.
The building stands at the centre of the Innovation District and has been transformed into a modern workspace, while maintaining some original features.
Mary Rodgers was appointed PorterShed community manager last month. He will also act as a liaison for visitors to Galway looking for a space to network and work during their stay.
