Tony McEnroe of SiriusXT has become the first winner of a new ‘Founder of the Year’ award, one a number of awards presented at the first ever High Potential Startup Awards, an initiative of Enterprise Ireland supported by Grant Thornton.

SirisuXT Ltd was incorporated in October 2015. In December 2015, the company raised €1,110,000 from six investors, including AIB and Bank of Ireland startup funds. In May 2016, McEnroe (55) parlayed €250,000 in taxpayer funding, when Enterprise Ireland invested.

The company spun out of the UCD School of Physics Spectroscopy Group. The vacuum-based laser-produced plasma technology, which is the core technology that underpins the SXT100, has been developed at UCD since 2005 by a team of plasma physicists.

SiriusXT was one of nine firms in the running for the Founder award, where each of the companies shortlisted were nominated by their founder peers. Liz Fulham of SalesOptimize and Eoin O’Broin of Solar AdTek received runner-up awards.

EI’s global business director Kevin Sherry said: “The Founder of the Year Award forms an important part of the HPSU Founders Forum, providing a platform to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment that entrepreneurs and startups have made to build world class companies of the future.

“The main objective of the forum is to provide a platform for founders to help founders succeed internationally and scale faster, and Tony McEnroe, CEO of SiriusXT, exemplifies a founder with a clear pathway to building international scale and with the potential to become a world leader in his field.”

Grant Thornton partner Kevin Foley added: The quality of the participants is a true reflection of the talented entrepreneurs we currently have across all sectors in Ireland. The awards are an excellent way of recognising the talent that is being nurtured and developed with the support of Enterprise Ireland’s HPSU Founders Forum programme. We look forward to working with Tony and SiriusXT to recognise the full potential of a very worthy winner.”

The other nominees included Immersive VR Education; Hub Controls; Clubstohire.com; Future Ticketing; Feedpods and TVadSync. At present, there are over 100 participants in the HPSU Founders Forum from a variety of sectors including software, medical devices, food, engineering and construction.
