Google is facing demands from the US government to sell Chrome, its popular web browser, as part of an effort to break up the company, writes Jasper Ward.

US officials are expected to request the forced sale in a legal filing later this week.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) will also ask the judge, who ruled in August that Google illegally monopolised the search market, to require measures related to artificial intelligence and its Android smartphone operating system, a Bloomberg report said.

Chrome, first released in 2008, is the world's most popular web browser, holding up to two-thirds of the market.

Google controls how people view the internet and what ads they see in part through its Chrome browser, which typically uses Google search and gathers information important to Google's ad business.

It is estimated to have about twothirds of the global browser market.

The DOJ declined to comment.

Google, in a statement from Lee-Anne Mulholland, vice president, Google Regulatory Affairs, said the DOJ is pushing a "radical agenda that goes far beyond the legal issues in this case" and would harm consumers.

The move would be an escalation of tension between the big tech firm and the Biden administration.

Any decision is likely to rest with the president-elect Donald Trump.

The company says it will appeal against the final decision.
