Flutter Entertainment store has no checkout – but you still pay anyway

Flutter Entertainment has opened a new food store at its Dublin office where staff can pick up what they like and leave without scanning any of the goods.

The store stocks fresh meals including a selection of hot and chilled dishes to-go, as well as drinks and confectionery.

Market x Flutter is not an ultra-generous staff perk. It operates off a system that logs the individual’s counter selections and bills them later.

Developed for Flutter by Compass Group Ireland, the technology is AI-powered computer vision technology from AiFi.

Customers ‘check in’ with a mobile device scan when entering the store. Facial recognition is not used; instead computer vision cameras track the shopper.

Padraig Ó Ríordáin, group commercial director, commented: “Our new-look global headquarters in Dublin encapsulates Flutter’s vision for the future of work. We have made a significant investment in this modern, agile and flexible workspace, and are excited for our colleagues based here to experience all it has to offer.  The frictionless store is just one example of its many unique features.”

Flutter employs c.1,700 people at its Dublin HQ.

The new contactless store is open to the general public too.

Compass MD Deirdre O’Neill said frictionless units will be established within other clients’ offices in the coming year by Compass Ireland, as well as in the sports and leisure sectors.

AiFi, founded by Steve Gu, also works with retailers such as Aldi, Carrefour, Zabka and Morrisons. The company has raised $31m from investors.
