Refurbished electronic devices retailer Refurbed has announced the Irish launch of its line of refurbished video games consoles, which includes devices such as the Super Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox.
Refurbed undertakes a 40-step refurbishment process to restore all devices and consoles to their factory settings, and customers can avail of a 30-day trial period to test their chosen console as well as a minimum 12-month warranty.
"We’re delighted to bring our range of fully refurbished video game consoles to the Irish market. Irish gamers can now revisit some of their favourite games and buy consoles at discounted prices, while also making a positive contribution to the environment," said Pádraig Power, marketing manager for Refurbed in Ireland.
"We also hope in the future to stock the current newest generation consoles such as Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. This is something we have been working hard towards since our launch in Ireland just over a year ago and has been in high demand from customers."
Refurbed, which was founded in Vienna by Peter Windischhofer, Kilian Kaminski and Jürgen Riedl in 2017, said the PlayStation and Nintendo are its most popular brands for refurbished games consoles, representing 89% of all refurbished consoles sold.
The PlayStation 4 Pro accounts for 30% of total video game console sales at Refurbed, with the Nintendo New 3DS XL making up 5.2%, the Nintendo DS Lite 5%, the Nintendo Game Boy Classic 3%, and Microsoft's Xbox One X 6%.
Research conducted by the company shows that a quarter of its Irish consumers have purchased a refurbished devices, with half of customers considering buying a second-hand consoles and the environmental impact given as the top reason.
The refurbishment process reduces carbon emissions by 70% compared to the manufacturing of new electronic devices, and 67% or two-thirds of Irish consumers said price was a very important factor when purchasing electronics.
"Looking at the latest consumer trends from Ireland and our other European markets, it is clear that consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious when buying electronic devices," Power added.
"As a result of this, we are also in the process of reviewing further product offerings in the Irish market as consumer demand increases for sustainable alternatives.
"As Ireland and Europe’s leading online refurbished e-commerce site, we want to make sure that we can offer these options to all customers who wish to avail of refurbished products.”
Refurbed employs around 200 people in eight countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Ireland), and the marketplace sells over 8,000 products, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, audio, gaming consoles and more.
The company completed a $17m (€14.3m) Series A funding round in 2020, and launched in Ireland last March, with co-founder Windischhofer reasoning that Irish customers seeking refurbished devices from the UK had felt the negative impact of Brexit.
