IT Whizzes Wanted For ESB Hackathon

ESB has announced details of what it says will be Ireland’s first ever energy hackathon, taking place from October 21 to 23 in Dogpatch Labs in Dublin.

‘The Big Energy Hack’ aims to develop solutions for a low-carbon future, with prizes of between €2,000 and €5,000 up for grabs.

ESB is seeking 150 hackers to participating in the event, to be drawn from sectors such as IT, marketing, finance and design. They will be asked to develop smart ideas that could help lower carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The proposed solutions need to centre around either smarter energy efficiency in the home, enhancing the e-car experience or optimising the electricity network. The three energy-focused challenges will dangle cash prizes of €5,000, €3,000 and €2,000 for the most innovative ideas.

Hackers with the top creations and concepts will also have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the next level at ESB’s innovation hub, X_Site.

Speaking about The Big Energy Hack, Paul Mulvaney, executive director of innovation at ESB said: “The hosting of Ireland’s first energy hackathon underpins our commitment to innovation and technology, while inspiring and empowering everyone to contribute to a low-carbon economy.”

The hackathon is being organised by ESB in partnership with DCU Alpha and Dogpatch Labs.
